7. "What if I want to believe, but I just don’t think I do?"

First of all, PRAY and ASK for the gift of faith!

Faith is “believing what we can’t see”, just keep really trying to grow in your faith, and this is how:  “Fake it ’til you make it”, or “Act as IF” you are a faithfilled person by doing what those with faith do, such as…

  • Going to Mass at least on Sundays.
  • Digging into your Bible–try the Bible in a Year podcast (10-15 minutes/day!) and that’ll help you so much!  After that, go through the Catechism in a Year podcast next!
  • Read other books about Christianity too, go to the local Christian bookstore or Catholic bookstore and see what grabs you.
  • Try to find friends who are also trying to live out their faith.  It makes a huge difference to be able to “chew on” these things with others.
  • Now there are SO MANY great youtube videos (anything by Fr. Mike Schmitz is great for beginners) & podcasts to help you learn more.  Watch The Chosen!
  • Keep asking God to help you grow, He’ll answer your prayers!

Mostly though, remember that even the greatest Saints doubted at times, that is normal and part of our humanity, so don’t beat yourself up about it. Rest in Him and know that He sticks with us no matter what we struggle with and no matter what are “feelings” tell us. If I find myself in times of doubt, I’ll pray a simple prayer from St. Thomas in the Bible (“doubting Thomas” – yep, that’s from the Bible!):

“I believe Lord…help my unbelief.”

(See the next question that touches on this topic, too.)

Hi I’m Kelly, a Catholic Christian, a wife, a homeschooling Mom, and a writer.  Matthew’s Gospel says, “Man does not live by bread alone” — and as passionate as I am about real food, nutrition, and natural healing, I believe that knowing the Lord is even more important!  So I started this blog in addition to my other one so I could hopefully help those who don’t “get” a lot of things about Christianity, which is just how I used to feel.

Over at my Kelly the Kitchen Kop blog I talk about how you keep your family healthy without going crazy in the process. 🙂

Be sure to subscribe for new updates above, that way you won’t miss anything, although I don’t update here very often.
